Mutare Lands

Mutare, Zimbabwe, is located in the eastern highlands of the country, near the border with Mozambique. The area is known for its scenic beauty, fertile soils, and relatively cooler climate compared to other parts of Zimbabwe, making it suitable for agriculture. Here’s an overview of the location and potential water sources for a 1000ha agricultural project:

Location Characteristics

Climate:

  - Mutare has a subtropical highland climate with moderate temperatures.

  - Rainfall is relatively high, averaging around 800–1,200 mm annually, with most rain falling during the wet season (November to March).

  - The cooler climate is ideal for crops like tea, coffee, fruits, and vegetables.

Topography:

  - The terrain is hilly and mountainous, with fertile valleys suitable for farming.

  - Proper land preparation and soil conservation techniques may be required to manage erosion on slopes.

Soil:

  - The soils are generally fertile, with a mix of loamy and clay soils.

  - Soil testing is recommended to determine specific nutrient requirements for your crops.

Accessibility:

  - Mutare is well-connected by road and rail, with access to major markets in Harare and Mozambique.

  - The city of Mutare itself provides access to agricultural supplies, labour, and services.

Nearby Water Sources:

Rivers:

 - The Odzi River and Mutare River are major water sources in the area. These rivers can be tapped for irrigation, especially during the dry season.

 - Smaller streams and tributaries may also be available depending on the specific location of the farm.

Dams:

 - The Osborne Dam, located northwest of Mutare, is a significant water reservoir that could potentially supply water for irrigation.

 - Smaller dams and reservoirs may also be present in the vicinity.

Groundwater:

 - Boreholes and wells are common in the region, providing a reliable source of water for irrigation and livestock.

 - A hydrogeological survey can help identify the best locations for drilling boreholes.

Rainwater Harvesting:

 - Given the high rainfall, rainwater harvesting systems (e.g., dams, ponds, and tanks
